W Rosyjskiej stolicy Moskwie, odbył się turniej kandydatów, w dniach 10 - 30 marca 2016 roku, turniej do samego końca był emocjonujący i wyłonił pretendenta, rosyjskiego arcymistrza Siergieja Kariakina (2760) który pokonał w finale Amerykanina, włoskiego pochodzenia am Fabiano Caruanę (2794) i stanie do walki o mistrzostwo Świata z norweskim arcymistrzem Magnusem Carlsenem (2851) który już po raz trzeci będzie bronił tytułu Mistrza Świata. Mecz będzie rozgrywany tego roku, w Nowym Jorku.
Arcymistrz Sergiej Karjakin, wygrywając turniej, wzbogacił się o 95 tysięcy euro i specjalną nagrodę od sponsora, BMW i8, wartości 140 tys. dolarów.
